-2003-

20-December
TPR's 2003 Review - Shawn Crawford

After a season in which he admits that consistency and focus were lacking, sprinter Shawn Crawford made a change, and is now training with Trevor Graham. "I know that he can get me where I need to be. It wasn't really a hard decision. If you want to run fast," he says, "you just need to move up there and train with Sprint Capital." A profile for the IAAF...

16-December
TPR's 2003 Review - Blanka Vlasic

By any measure, 2003 was an exceptionally memorable year in the women's High Jump. A record 12 jumpers cleared the two meter barrier in 2003, and the youngest among them was two-time World Junior Champion Blanka Vlasic. This year, Vlasic opts for a longer approach...

25-November
World Champs Silver Medallist Darvis Patton: "In 2004, the 200 is mine."

"I'm on a mission in 2004," the personable sprinter says, and like others whose eyes are firmly cast on Athens, he's very hungry. "I got a little taste of it this year, but now I want the whole pie."...

23-November
Jenny Crain interview

With her 16th-place finish, Jenny Crain produced one of the more noteworthy performances by an American at this year’s unseasonably warm ING New York City Marathon. The Wisconsin native finished in 2:38:49 as the second American finisher, knocking nearly two minutes from her previous best, set in 1998. Twice an Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon, Crain still considered running an avocation until the spring of 2002. Then, at age 34, she uprooted herself from a demanding job and her long-time base near Milwaukee and relocated to Eugene, Oregon to focus her complete attention on earning a spot on the 2004 Olympic Team. An interview for Fast-women.com ...

21-November
TPR's 2003 Review - Kenta Bell: "I think I have it figured out"

For several years, Kenta Bell has managed to end his seasons hovering near the top of the annual Triple Jump world lists. Now, with unfortunately timed injuries and training experimentations hopefully behind him, the American is poised to make that next big step. "I think I have it figured out," the affable 26 year-old Texan believes...

14-November
TPR's 2003 Review - Nieto Jumping Into Public Recognition

High jumper Jamie Nieto may not yet be considered a household name on the athletics circuit but with a staggering 33 competitions in 2003, his is a name you've obviously seen. And as one of 11 jumpers to manage 2.31 (7-7) or better this season, the Sacramento, California native's name is very much expected to be in the Athens medal hunt picture next year. A profile for the IAAF...

07-November
Gatlin's Search for Consistency

Just a little over a year ago, Justin Gatlin made headlines in the Athletics world with his decision to leave collegiate competition behind to ply his trade in the professional ranks. Less than a year later, the young sprinter collected one of the sport's largest-ever paydays, having already claimed a World Indoor title, and finds himself on the pre-season short list of Olympic favourite. An exclusive interview for the IAAF...

02-November
Lel, Okayo Win in New York

Running in unseasonably warm conditions, Martin Lel and Margaret Okayo scored the second consecutive Kenyan sweep at the ING New York City Marathon.
The 27 year-old Okayo, who won here in 2001, reached the finish line in Central Park in 2:22:31, shattering her own course record by nearly two minutes. Lel, winner of last month's World Half Marathon championship, broke from defending champion Rodgers Rop in the final mile to win in 2:10:30. A complete report for the international distance running news service, Race Results Weekly and Athletics Weekly...

24-October
TPR's 2003 Review - Chebii's Breakthrough Season in Perspective

Statistically speaking, 2003 was perhaps the finest season ever in the men's 5000 metres. 13 men dipped under 13 minutes 24 times, bettering the previous best, when 12 turned the trick 17 times in 2000. And leading the charge was Kenyan Abraham Chebii, who became only the third athlete to crack the still-formidable 13-minute barrier four times in a single season...

19-October
TRACK PROFILE Report #69 - Kevin Toth issues statement

In a statement issued Sunday morning, 2003 U.S. shot put champion Kevin Toth denied having used any banned substances.
"I can say that I have never even heard of THG," Toth said in the statement issued this morning through his attorney, Howard Jacobs, of Westlake Village, Calif. "Throughout the 20 years that I have been a track and field athlete, I have never taken any substance that was banned by the International Olympic Committee or by the IAAF." From the TRACK PROFILE Report #69...

Maria Mutola became the first sole winner of the one million dollar IAAF Golden League after her 1:57.78 win in the 800 meters at the Ivo Van Damme Memorial in front of a near-capacity crowd of 47,000 in Brussels Friday night. A complete report for Runner's World On-Line...

Coverage from the Ninth World Track & Field Championships

31-August
Being overlooked played into Said-Guerni's hands

The only thing about the men's 800m final that was predictable was it's unpredictability. But even then, Algerian Djabir Said-Guerni was on few observers' radar screens. And being ignored suited him just fine. Winner's profile for the IAAF.

30-August
Barber delivers the goods

For the wildly enthusiastic and often times deafening crowds at the Stade de France this week, the first gold medal for the host country could not have been delivered in more dramatic fashion. Nor could it have come from an athlete more deserving. Winner's profile for the IAAF.

30-August
Capel - Burying the ghosts of Sydney

Three years ago in the cavernous Olympic Stadium in Sydney, John Capel's world crumbled around him. One of the most promising sprinters in the world, the young American froze in the blocks, and literally put his career on ice. Winner's profile for the IAAF.

29-August
'I can only be Kelli White'

Last night, Kelli White became only the third woman to ever claim the sprint double at a World Championships. But if you thought that her win in the 200m was as easy as it was dominant, you'd be sadly misinformed. Winner's profile for the IAAF.

28-August
USA attempts to salvage sprint pride in the 200m

By any measure, it hasn't been a good week for the USA men's sprint corps. With former World Champion Maurice Greene injured, Jon Drummond's withdrawal from competition, Tim Montgomery's quick disappearance from Paris, and being shut out of the 100m medals for only the second time at a World Championships, one might think that that Team USA's dash troops might be feeling a bit demoralised. Update for the IAAF.

28-August
Gebrselassie to attempt 10,000m World record in Brussels

Haile Gebreselassie will make an assault on his own World record in the 10,000m at the Ivo Van Damme Golden League meeting next Friday in Brussels, the Ethiopian announced this morning in Paris.

28-August
Guevara - the World record, 'I have not quite forgotten about it'

When Ana Guevara won her first 400m race of the year by more than a second, running 49.34 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, it became quite evident that her strongest foe this season would be the formidable 49 second barrier. Winner's profile for the IAAF.

27-August
For 400m champion Jerome Young, it's been a long haul

More than a decade ago, Young was talked into taking up track by a teacher, but didn't fully realise at the time what he was getting into - "I didn't realize they were running cross country at the time." But last night at the Stade de France, the Jamaican-born American knew precisely what he had gotten into. Winner's profile for the IAAF.

26-August
Being an outsider is fine - Felicien

For Canadian hurdler Perdita Felicien, a two-time NCAA 100m hurdles champion, being an outsider in Paris suits her just fine. "I love it," the 22 year-old from Pickering, Ontario said after her near PB 12.70 yesterday, the second fastest time of the opening round. "I always tell people that this is so much easier that being at the NCAA championships because there, everyone expects Perdita from Illinois to win."

25-August
What doesn't kill you, really makes you stronger

"What doesn't kill you really makes you stronger". That's the saying that Jacques Freitag says best describes his past year. In June of 2002, the 21 year-old South African had to have his ankle anatomically reconstructed. "After that," the 1999 World Youth and 2000 World Junior champion said, "you're going to to be tougher than all the other the competitors and be able to handle whatever they throw to you." Winner's profile for the IAAF.

24-August
Ottey - grace in motion

It has perhaps become cliche to describe Merlene Ottey as a sprinter who is aging gracefully. That descriptor was certainly used in abundance when, at age 37, she raced to a 200m bronze medal at the 1997 World Championships, then again three years later, when she finished fourth in the 100m at the Sydney Olympic Games. For the IAAF.

22-August
Kelli White is prepared and ready to run

Arriving in Paris with two solid 100m wins behind her, US double sprint champion Kelli White confidently declared today, "I'm really ready to run." For the IAAF.

22-August
Cloete - 'I hope Kajsa will be ready'

With a dozen women having cleared the still venerable two metres mark this year, the women's high hump, which begins next Thursday (28 Aug), is among the most eagerly anticipated events at these 9th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. With competition so stiff, defending World champion Hestrie Cloete, knows she can't take anything for granted. For the IAAF.

14-August
Deena Drossin tries to make the best of a challenging season

After a less-than-stellar three-race early August tour of Europe, Deena Drossin gave a blunt self-assessment on the eve of her appearance at third appearance at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics. "I'm not in the best shape of my life," she said frankly, after finishing a distant tenth in the 3,000-meter race in Zurich's Weltklasse August 15. "I don't feel as well prepared for this as I usually am. I seem to run fast in the springtime but can't seem to pull it together for a solid track season the past few years." Fast-women.com ...

31-July
Triumph at home for Stephanie Graf in Linz

Some might say that it was the rain - the first substantial day-long rain in more than a month in drought-stricken central Europe - that took center stage at last night's Intersport Gugl IAAF Grand Prix Meeting in Linz, Austria. But as far as the 10,500 fans at the Stadium Auf der Gugl were concerned, the highlight of meeting's 15th edition was the first domestic appearance of the year by Austrian athletics flag-bearer, Stephanie Graf. And with her commanding 1:59.05 win in the 800 metres, the Olympic silver medallist didn't dampen the spirits of the enthusastic crowd. Complete report for the IAAF...

Allyson Felix: The future of US sprinting -- Today

It's not really a stretch to describe Californian Allyson Felix as "the future" of sprinting. Her world-leading 22.11 in Mexico City's thin air on May 3 not only made that point abundantly clear, it even suggested that "the future" might be now. Profile for the IAAF.

18-May
Pappas - No Longer Overwhelmed

When Tom Pappas cruised to the World Indoor Heptathlon title in Birmingham last March, setting five personal bests in the process, it was described by many as a near-picture perfect multi-event performance. However, the soft-spoke Pappas doesn't necessarily concur. A profile for the IAAF.

Gary Kikaya - "I believe there are no limits."

Forgive some for dismissing Gary Kikaya's 44.51 NCAA 400m win last May as a one-hit wonder. After all, sub-45 performers come and go at the NCAA ranks, even if their winning runs hold up to the be the third fastest of the year. But after a solo 45.71 win to nab the indoor crown last month at Arkansas, the 23 year-old Tennessee senior is beginning to show that he is something more than an anomaly.
