Notes: Toe Injury Forces Uzelec to Sit Out

(TPNS) - 10-Aug-2002 - Cleveland, OH, USA -- A fractured toe will force three-time national Junior champion Kristal Uzelec from her Senior national championship debut. The 16-year-old from Whitehall, Pa., can still petition into a spot at the World Championships selection camp to be held in October at the Karolyi ranch in Huntsville, Texas. "I was really looking forward to competing at the senior level," Uzelec said. "I still would love to represent the U.S. at Worlds, so now I plan to let my foot rest and get ready for training camp." Uzelec was the first woman to win three consecutive junior titles...

Nearly 200 competitors are vying for spots on the U.S. national Senior and Junior teams, as well as for the upcoming Individual World Gymnastics Championships to be held in Debrecen, Hungary November 20-24. All individual event champions and up to three additional athletes in each event will be invited to participate in the Individual World Championship intra-squad competition, afterwhich the squad will be announced...

A strong performance on the pommel horse helped Grant Osborne of San Diego earn his first junior all-around national title. The 17-year-old, who was fifth in the all-around competition last year, tallied 50.850 points to top Gerry Signorelli of Colorado Springs, whose combined score was 50.500. Signorelli was seventh last year...

1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Bart Connor described how things have changed in the world of men's gymnastics since the pinnacle of his career. "Most of the toughest things we were doing back then, these guys do now in warm-ups."...
