The over-all team victors --Eastern Michigan for the men and Ball State for the women-- were not that terribly surprising, but the individual accolades at the MAC Indoor Championships were.

It was a coming out party for Akron junior Mary Varga who was justly awarded for the meet's outstanding performances after her high jump/pentathlon double win, with both setting new MAC indoor standards.
She began by consolidating the Zip's conference monopoly in the women's multis after she added 62 points to former teammate Christi Smith's MAC record, raising it to 4,078 points. Her tall is the best by an American this year, and currently #16 in the world. She then added a win in the high jump with a PR 6-1.25 clearance, an NCAA auto-qualifier, and #2 on the 2001 NCAA list.

The men's sprints were as close as anticipated with each decided by a mere 0.01. Bobby Cruse took the 60 in 6.73 for his third conference indoor short sprint title, edging Eastern's Gerald Rasool, with Akron's LeShaunte Edwards third in 6.76. Edwards turned the tables in the 200, handing Cruse his first 200 loss of the indoor campaign with a 21.14 auto qualifier for his first MAC Indoor title. This was Cruse's third MAC runner-up finish in the 200.

Soph Katie Nowak was the big gun for Ball State, contributing a mile/3000/5000 triple win (4:54.78/10:01.95/17:14.86) to the team cause. Eastern's Hanna Palamaa raised her own MAC record in the vault to 12-11.75 (3.96). Nadine Robinson (EMU) notched a sprint double win (7.56/24.70).
