05-Feb-2007 Feature: Spearmon takes it to the next level At the post-race press conference in Stuttgart after the 200 metres at the World Athletics Final, Wallace Spearmon sat patiently, mostly watching and listening as his training partner Tyson Gay was the focus of attention. Gay had just lowered his personal best to 19.68 seconds to equal Frank Fredericks as the third fastest man ever over the half-lap distance. Spearmon too produced a career best of 19.88 to finish a distant second in the race, and vowed that after an off-peak 2006 season, that he’d be back in 2007. As the reigning World Championships silver medallist, Spearmon’s proclamation hardly seemed a brash boast. A feature for the IAAF Magazine... 05-Feb-2007 Feature: Xavier Carter the X-man storms to glory One would be hard-pressed to find an athlete who made as enormous and nearly instantaneous a splash in the sport in recent years than did Xavier Carter in 2006. Barely a month after producing the best showing at an NCAA Championship since the days of the legendary Jesse Owens, the 20-year-old American captured the imagination of the athletics world with his dazzling 19.63 dash in Lausanne, a performance second only to Michael Johnson’s seemingly insurmountable 19.32 run into immortality at the 1996 Olympic Games a decade ago. Suddenly, a record that seemed untouchable for perhaps another decade - or even more - seemed slightly less out of reach, thanks to the breakout performance of a young sprinter whose name was being mentioned in the same breath with Owens and Johnson. Throw in a nickname - ‘X-Man’ - with wide cross over appeal, and you have the makings of a true international sporting star. A feature for the IAAF Magazine... 03-Aug-2006 Feature: Impossible is nothing for Blanka When Stefka Kostadinova raised the World Record in the high jump to a seemingly impossibly high 2.09m on 30 August 1987, Blanka Vlasic had not yet celebrated her fifth birthday. Now, 19 years later, after the best indoor season of her career and recent injury and illness woes behind her, that 2.09m standard set by the Bulgarian legend so long ago no longer appears so, well, impossibly high for the rising Croatian star. A feature for the IAAF Magazine... 25-Jul-2005 Feature: Bev Kearney: “You learn that the impossible is possible” In 1981, Beverly Kearney accepted an assistant coaching position at Indiana State University merely to fulfill a requirement for her master’s degree. 24 years after that necessary diversion, Kearney is among the most successful and respected coaches in the world. And it all happened rather accidentally for the current head women’s coach at the University of Texas in Austin. A feature for the IAAF Magazine... 13-May-2005 Feature: Time to Deliver For Alan Webb A look back and ahead for U.S. miler Alan Webb. "Some of the pressure’s gone away," he said, "but the great thing about last year is that now it’s a different kind of pressure. There are new expectations. I finally moved on and it’s closer. It’s happening." A feature for the IAAF Magazine... 13-May-2005 Feature: New Tactics Needed for Bungei’s Quest Middle distance ace Wilfred Bungei usually spends the autumn and early winter months far removed from the spotlight he’s become accustomed to, choosing instead the solitude required for his rigorous end-of-the-year training regimen. His lead-up to the 2005 season, however, couldn’t have been more different. A feature for the IAAF Magazine...
